实用高中英语用法词典(08) beg[be^] v.1.请求,乞求:He begged her to forgive him. 他请求她原谅他。 2.乞讨:He begged from door to door. 他挨家挨户地乞讨。 begin[bI5^In] v. (began, begun) 开始,着手:I began school when I was six. 我六岁入学。/ He began to laugh. 他笑了起来。◆to begin with 首先,第一 【辨析】begin 与 start:两者均可表示“开始”,在很多情况下可换用。但有以下区别:1. begin 表示的开始往往指从起点开始,而 start 则不一定。因此当一件事中断后再开始时通常应用 start again:Building began last week. 上周开始建造了。/ The meeting started and stopped, and after a long pause, started again. 会议开始后又停止了,过了好长一会儿,才又开始。2. begin 的动作性较弱,start 的动词性较强,因此在表示某种状态或缓慢的“开始”时多用 begin;表示某种动作尤其是某种急速的动作“开始”时,要用 start:School begins on September 1. 9 月 1 日开学。/ The cat suddenly started rushing at the mouse. 那只猫突然开始向那只老鼠扑去。3. 表示“开动”、“出发”等,一般用 start:My father couldn’t start the car. 我父亲无法开动汽车。4. 两者均为非延续性动词,因此不能与表示一段时间的状语连用。 beginning[bI5^InIN] n. [C,U]开始,开端:The idea of the airplane had its beginning with study of the flight of birds. 制造飞机的想法起源于对鸟类飞行的研究。◆from beginning to end 从头至尾 / from the beginning 从一开始 / at the beginning (of)… 在…开头 【用法】表示“起初”或“在开始时”,可用介词 in 或 at;表示“从一开始”用from the beginning;若其后接有介词 of, 则其前通常用介词 at:A war broke out at the beginning of the century. 世纪之初爆发了一次战争。 behave[bI5heIv] v.1.行为,举止:The child behaved badly at the party. 那孩子在聚会上的表现很差。 2. 守规矩;举止适当有礼:Behave yourself! 放规矩点! behavior, behaviour[bi5heivjE] n. [U]行为,举止:When his teacher told his parents about his behavior, he felt great shame. 当老师告诉他父母他的行为时,他感到非常羞愧。◆be on one’s best behaviour 努力表现良好的行为,很守规矩,很谨慎 behind[bI5haInd] prep.1.(表示位置)在…后面:He sat behind me. 他就坐在我后面。2. (表示时间)在…后面:If winter comes, can spring be far behind? 冬天到了,春天还会远吗?adv.在后面;向后;落后:He’s a long way behind. 他远远落在后面了。 【用法】表示时间“在…之后”时,其反义词是 before(在…之前);表示位置“在…后面”时,其反义词是 in front of(在…前面)。 Beijing[beidViN] n.北京 being[5bi:IN] n. 1.[U]存在;生命:the aim of our being 我们生存的目的 / man’s social being 人们的社会存在2.[C]物;生物;人:Man is a moral being. 人是能辨是非的动物。 Belgium[5beldVEm] n.比利时 belief[bI5li:f] n. 1.[U]信任,相信:I haven’t much belief in his honesty. 我不是很相信他的诚实。2.[C]信念;所相信的事物:a firm belief 坚定的信念 / You mustn’t joke with him about religious belief. 有关宗教信仰的事你决不可和他开玩笑。◆beyond belief 难以置信的,不可思议的 / in the belieg that… 相信 believe[bI5li:v] v. 1.相信,信任:I could hardly believe my eyes. 我几乎不能相信自己的眼睛。2.认为,想:People used to believe that the world was flat. 过去人们以为地球是扁的。◆believe it or not 信不信由你 / make believe 假装,装作 / Seeing is beleiving. 眼见为实 【用法】1. 后接否定的宾语从句时,通常将否定转移到主句上:I don’t believe that he will lose the game.我相信他不会输掉这场比赛。2. 在简略答语中,一般不单独用 believe, 而用 I believe so. 或 I don’t believe so. [I believe not.] :“Will it be fine tomorrow?” “I believe so.”“明天会是晴天吗?”“我相信会的。” 【辨析】believe sb 与 believe in sb:前者指相信某人的话(= believe what sb says);后者指信任某人的为人(= trust sb):I can believe him, but I cannot believe in him. 我相信他说的话,但是不相信他的为人。 |
