[C]自行车:Did you come by bicycle? 你是骑自行车来的吗? big[bI^] adj.1.大的,巨大的:a big city 大城市 / You can buy sugar at any big store. 你可以在任何大商店里买到糖。 2.重大的,重要的:a big decision 重大决定 / a big victory 重大胜利 / The big moment has come at last. 重要时刻终于到来了。◆be [get] too big for one’s boots 自负,自大 / big deal 没什么了不起 / a big fish 大人物 【辨析】big, large 与 great:1. big 和 large 通常用于谈论事物的大小:We have a big [large] house. 我们有一幢很大的房子。/ The elephant is the biggest [largest] animal in the zoo. 大象是动物圆里体形最大的动物。在现代英语中,一般不用 great 来指大小。偶有此用法,通常带有感情色彩(如厌烦、恐惧、气愤等),含有大得出奇或给人印象很深之意:Look at that great hole in my trousers. 瞧我裤子上这个大洞(含有厌烦之意)。2. 形容人时,一般不用 large,可用 big,这样用的 big 通常指身大体胖或辈分之大,若用于儿童则含有“长大成熟”之意:His children are big now. 他的孩子现在长大了。3. great 通常用于不可数的抽象名词(即当它表示一般概念时)之前,此时不用 big 或 large,如:great courage(极大的勇气), great importance(极为重要)等。另外,great 用于事物时也有“伟大的”之意:Beijing is a great city. 北京是一个伟大的城市。 |
