■survey[sE:5veI] n. 调查；测验

【典型例句】

Only children under five are excepted from this survey. 这次调查仅仅不包括5岁以下的儿童。

Surveys have shown that more and more people are getting into debt. 调查显示越来越多的人负债。

For the purposes of the survey we’ve split the town into four areas. 为了便于调查，我们把这个镇划成4个区。

according to the survey, as few as 10% of us are happy with our jobs. 据调查显示，我们当中只有10%的人对自己的工作感到满意。

【典型例句】

Add 360 to the total. 在总数上再加360。

Many words have been added to this edition of the dictionary. 本词典的这一版里新增加了很多词。

She added that she was waiting for a reply. 她补充说她在等候回信。

【典型例句】

Can you add up this column of figures? 你能把这行数字加起来吗？

The waiter added up the food check. 侍者把饭菜的钱算了一下。

【用法补充】

类似“3+4＝7”这样的算式，可用以下包含add的英语句子表达：

Three added to four makes seven.

Three and four add up to seven.

If you add three to four, you get seven.

■point [pCInt] n.点；尖端；分数

【典型例句】

They are in agreement on that point. 在这点上，他们的意见一致。

We are three points behind the other team. 我们比对方队落后3分。

Whoever gains the most points wins the competition. 谁得分最多，谁就赢得比赛。

■upset [Qp5set] vt. & vi.(upset, upset, upsetting)使不安；使心烦adj.心烦意乱；不适的；不舒服的

【典型例句】

He was upset by the bad news. 坏消息使他感到不安。

The news upset the whole town. 这个消息引起了全城居民的不安。

She’ll stammer her words if you upset her. 如果你使她不高兴的话，她会变得结结巴巴。

You may be a bit upset but it’s really nothing to make a song and dance about. 你尽管有些苦恼，但实在不必小题大做。

■ignore [I^5nC:] vt. 不理睬，忽视

【典型例句】

To ignore this would be a mistake. 忽略这一点是错误的。

She ignored our worries about the weather. 我们对天气十分担心，她却不管不顾。

【语法说明】

有时可后接动名词(其前通常有所有格)作宾语。如：

You’ll have to ignore their talking so loud. 他们说话声音很大，你不要理会便是。

■calm [kB:m] adj. 平静的；镇静的；沉着的vt. & vi.(使)平静，(使)镇定，平息

【典型例句】

We swam in the calm sea. 我们在风平浪静的大海里游泳。

Tina was frightened, but she stayed calm. 蒂娜吓了一跳，但仍保持镇静。

The mother calmed her child. 母亲使孩子安静下来。

■calm down平静下来；镇定下来

【典型例句】

Just calm down a bit! 你先静一静!

Calm down and tell us what’s going on. 冷静下来，告诉我们出什么事了。

【用法补充】

calm down中的副词down有时也可省略。如：

Have a brandy it’ll help to calm you (down). 来点儿白兰地——能使你静下来。
