备考一般过去时要点说明

一、考查其基本用法

表示在过去某个时间所发生的动作或存在的状态。常与when, then, at that time, just now, a moment ago, three days ago, last year, yesterday, in 1988等连用，但更多地是通过上下文来表明时间。如：(from www.nmet168.com)

1. Sales of CDs have greatly increased since the early 1990s, when people ________ to enjoy the advantages of this new technology. (江苏卷)

A. begin                                B. began

【分析】答案选B。when引导的是一个非限制性定语从句，when指20世纪90年代初，在这个过去时间发生的事，用一般过去时。

2. —I hear Jane has gone to the Holy Island for her holiday.

—Oh, how nice! Do you know when she ________ ? (湖南卷)

A. was leaving                        B. had left

C. has left                         　 D. left

【分析】答案选D。由问句可知Jane已经度假去了，“离开”应发生在过去的某个时间，所以用一般过去时。另外，when不能与完成时连用。

3. I ________ you not to move my dictionary—now I can’t find it. (四川卷)

A. asked                         　　B. ask

C. was asking                         D. had asked

【分析】答案选A。由now可知前句的意思是：我曾经叫你不要搬动我的词典的 (你偏不听)。“叫”是在过去发生的动作，用一般过去时。

4. The discussion ________ alive when an interesting topic was brought in. (浙江卷)

A. was coming                         B. had come

C. has come                         　D. came

【分析】答案选D。when从句谓语是一般过去时，come也应用一般过去时。句意是：当引入一个有趣的话题时，那场讨论又变得活跃起来。

5. My mind wasn’t on what he was saying so I’m afraid I ________ half of it. (全国卷)

A. was missing                         B. had missed

C. will miss                         　 D. missed

【分析】答案选D。was saying发生在过去，“没听到(miss)”应该是“他说”的时候没听到，即miss也发生在过去，而miss作“未听见”解时，一般没有进行时，只有D正确。

6. It is said in the book that Thomas Edison (1847—1931) ________ the world-leading inventor for sixty years. (辽宁卷)

A. would be                               B. has been

C. had been                                D. was

【分析】答案选D。由括号中注明的生卒时间可知，“Thomas Edison曾在60年里一直是世界最重要的发明家”是过去存在的状态。
